A Growing Need for Complex Care At Home

The UK’s approach to long-term health is undergoing a major shift, with home-based care becoming an increasingly vital alternative to hospitals. This change is driven by a rising number of people with chronic conditions and a growing preference for receiving care at home. This article explores the statistics behind this transformation, the benefits of complex home care, the challenges the sector faces, and government initiatives aimed at supporting this change.

The Push Towards Home-Based Care

Recent data clearly shows a growing need for long-term care. Around 20-40% of UK adults have multiple chronic health conditions, a number that jumps to over 50% for people over 65. This expanding need puts a strain on traditional healthcare settings, and as a result, care is increasingly being delivered in the community. Research consistently finds that most people, especially those over 45, prefer to receive care in their own homes. The home care industry is growing rapidly, with a 12% increase since 2020, and a significant surge in the number of CQC-registered domiciliary care services, which rose by 63% from 2017 to 2024. This growth shows a clear redirection of resources away from institutional settings and toward home-based care.

The Advantages of Home-Based Care

Complex care at home, which provides comprehensive support for people with significant health needs, offers many benefits. It allows individuals to maintain their independence and routines, and receive personalized care that can be easily adjusted as their needs change. Being in a comfortable and familiar environment can reduce stress and anxiety, especially for people with cognitive conditions. Home care also fosters stronger family and social connections and carries a lower risk of infection compared to hospitals. Furthermore, it can often be more cost-effective than residential care. Studies have even shown that patients receiving “Hospital at Home” care can achieve similar or better health outcomes with higher satisfaction.

What’s Being Done?

The UK government is implementing initiatives to “rewire and future-proof” the NHS. The 10-Year Health Plan (July 2025) includes rolling out Neighbourhood Health Services to bring care closer to home and setting a new standard for personalized care plans. The government is also promoting digital transformation and integrated care models to improve coordination and empower people to manage their own conditions.

For those with chronic conditions, complex home care is an empowering solution that allows them to maintain dignity and live a fulfilling life from the comfort of their own home.
