When people think of high-quality care, they may usually think of our compassionate care teams who are in the community every day, providing valuable care to all those we support. However, behind every smooth-running visit, well organised schedule, and reassuring phone call, there is a passionate office team who help to keep the wheels in motion.
Today, we are stepping behind the scenes of our Hull branch, to introduce you to Gracie Clayton, an Admin Apprentice whose enthusiasm and organisation have made her a key part of the Springfield Healthcare team. We recently caught up with her to discuss her apprenticeship journey, what her job entails, and her aspirations for the future.
What are your typical day-to-day duties for your job role?
In my job role, I ensure everything runs smoothly by completing any outstanding activities. These include amending visit records, managing key codes and removing them from care plans when needed. I also keep a close check on live view to maintain full oversight, and I handle the arranging and booking of candidates for interviews, alongside other general administrative tasks.
What made you want to work in the care industry?
I chose to work in the industry after seeing how someone so close to me was treated in hospital. It highlighted to me the importance of everyone receiving dignified and respectful care. My mum works as a carer too and seeing her dedication inspires me to do the same and make a real difference for others. I am also keen to progress and work my way up through the company as my career develops.
How do you balance your tasks alongside your apprenticeship coursework and learning modules?
I plan everything weekly and prioritise the important tasks. I also speak openly with my manager and tutor so that I can build a steady routine and keep flexible as necessary. I would then review my progress at the end of the week to allow me to plan and prioritise for the following week.
What new skills have you picked up since starting that you are most proud of?
I am most proud of my problem solving of care plans, my attention to detail, organisational skills and professional adaptability.
How has the Springfield team supported your training and development?
Springfield initially welcomed me for a 2-day work experience which I completed. Following this, I asked if I could come back one a day a week, where they showed me how to change rotas for carers and answer the phones. Fast forward a year, I am now an Admin Apprentice with my own desk. Each day, my manager or a member of the team makes sure that I know what I am doing and if I am okay. If I ever look a bit lost, there is always someone that can help me.
What is your favourite part about working at Springfield Healthcare?
My favourite part of Springfield is everything! From the lovely people I’ve met across all the branches to the little family I have acquired along the way. A particular favourite part of mine is the opportunity that Springfield have given me and how they trust me with important jobs and responsibilities.
Looking ahead to the future, where do you hope this apprenticeship takes you in your career over the next few years?
This apprenticeship is hopefully my first step towards the very top and my goal to become CEO! Over the next few years, I aim to gain a strong understanding of every aspect of the business, and progress through leadership and management roles. I want to keep learning, and earn the experience and skills needed to one day lead an organisation myself.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering completing a similar apprenticeship in the care sector?
I would just say do it! 2 years ago, I was going through probably the most difficult period of my life and now I am here. For anyone wanting to go into a similar role, it is a real eye opener that is also incredibly rewarding.
