Celebrating Global Intergenerational Week at Springfield Healthcare

At Springfield Healthcare, we believe that individuals from all walks of life should have the opportunity to build and grow meaningful relationships. This Global Intergenerational Week, we are celebrating the wonderful magic that can be created when different generations come together. Global Intergenerational Week is an annual campaign that encourages connections between people of all ages to reduce ageism, battle loneliness and establish sustainable communities.

Intergenerational care is at the forefront of our future here at Springfield. It is a core part of our philosophy and is vital for tackling social isolation, improving mental wellbeing, and fostering a sense of belonging for everyone involved. Whether it’s a child’s smile brightening a room or a resident sharing decades of experience, these interactions create an inclusive environment for all.

Introducing Grove House

As we look to the future of integrated care, we are excited to spotlight our new care home, Grove House in Harrogate. Grove House isn’t just designed to be a building; it’s designed to be a community hub. Situated in very close proximity to Grove Road Primary School, this home represents an exciting opportunity to embed intergenerational living into the very fabric of our residents’ daily lives.

Why the Grove House & Grove Road School Partnership Matters

Our vision for Grove House includes a strong partnership with our neighbours at the primary school. We plan to host regular intergenerational activities, where the pupils will be invited to participate in activities with our residents.

By bringing the classroom into the care home and the care home into the community, we are creating something truly special. The children will develop better social skills by keeping regular contact with older adults. Meanwhile, our residents will experience increased physical activity and a renewed sense of purpose.

When children interact with our residents, they will learn the importance of listening and patience, which will only benefit them later in life.  By building positive relationships with our residents, children will develop a positive attitude towards ageing, reducing anxiety and prejudice.

Regular interaction with the younger generations means that feelings of loneliness or depression will be reduced for our residents. Additionally, for those who live with dementia, relationships with the pupils at Grove Road will encourage social interaction in a way that few other activities can. These interactions will provide our residents with a sense of purpose and strong connections to the world outside the walls of the care home.

As we celebrate Global Intergenerational Week, we aren’t just looking back at the wonderful moments we’ve shared across our existing branches, we are also looking forward to the new connections waiting to be made at Grove House.
