For our second instalment of our Meet the Team series, we sat down with Lucy Wambui, our Advanced Clinical Lead in Specialist Care. Lucy’s journey is a fascinating one; in our chat, she shares the path that led her here and why she’s so passionate about bringing hospital-level clinical care directly into the comfort of an individual’s own home.

What first attracted you to begin a career in care?
I was initially drawn to care through a strong desire to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives. A key motivation of mine has been to support individuals with specialist and complex health needs, promoting dignity, independence and high-quality of life.
Describe how your career has progressed in the sector to get you where you are today?
My career has progressed through a combination of clinical experience, continuous professional development and leadership opportunities. This first began with an international role with the UN as Outreach Manager in a community setting, offering maternal-child healthcare, preventive health services and immunisation for under 5’s and maternal health services. This was for the largest refugee camp in Africa, which catered for the health of more than 240,000 refugees.
As a General Nurse with Adult ITU training, I have practiced in the NHS for 16 years and developed expertise in complex care, public health and clinical governance. Overtime, I began taking on more strategic and leadership responsibilities, which led me to my current role as an Advanced Clinical Lead, overseeing complex care services at Springfield Healthcare.
Describe your day-to-day and wide duties of your job role?
My role is structured around clinical practice, providing oversight of specialist care packages, and ensuring safe, high-quality and person-centred care delivery. I also lead teams, support staff and ensure strong clinical governance and compliance.
I also support training, competency development and continuous learning for staff who will be delivering complex care to our clients. I also aim to drive service improvement where possible, through audits and by implementing evidence-based practice to enhance outcomes through research and improvement. My role also means that I need to ensure we maintain high professional standards of accountability, ethics and clinical excellence in all aspects of care through professional practice.
What is the most rewarding part of your role at Springfield?
The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing the positive impact of high-quality care on individuals and families. Being able to support people to remain safely at home while improving their wellbeing and independence is incredibly fulfilling.
How has the landscape of care changed since you first started your career?
The sector has become increasingly complex, with more individuals being supported at home with advanced clinical needs. There is also a greater emphasis on multidisciplinary working, clinical governance, digital systems and delivering hospital-level care within the community.
What advice would you give someone who may be interested in pursuing a similar role within the care sector?
I would encourage them to focus on developing a strong clinical foundation, remain committed to continuous learning and seek opportunities to develop leadership skills. Having compassion, resilience and accountability are also essential in delivering safe and effective care.
What are you most excited about regarding the future of Springfield Healthcare?
I am excited about the continued growth of the complex care services at Springfield, innovating care delivery and the upcoming opportunities to further strengthen clinical governance and workforce development. Springfield Healthcare is well positioned to lead in delivering high-quality specialist care within the communities we operate.
What unique skills and experiences do you bring to the team?
I am passionate about delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality complex care through clinical excellence, leadership and innovation.
When you aren’t at work, how do you like to spend your time?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and grandchildren, which is both relaxing and rewarding.
