For 15-year-old Gracie from Oakfield School in Hull, a two-day work experience placement with Springfield Healthcare was life-changing. Torn between hair and beauty and health and social care, she sought clarity on where her career was headed. Her interest was sparked by Tracey Hopkinson, Springfield’s Head of Youth Academy, who had delivered a careers talk at her school as part of the Inclusive Careers Project.

Gracie made such a strong impression during her initial visit that she was invited back. She now returns every Wednesday from 10 am to 2 pm to the Hull branch, and has become a highly valued team member.

“From the very first day, Gracie made a strong impression,” Tracey noted. She has already demonstrated her commitment by completing Care Certificate e-learning on infection control and safeguarding. Her hands-on contributions include reception duties, assisting with PPE stock management, and taking on various administrative projects”.

Gracie’s dedication has unlocked clear pathways to a future career:

• She could start as an apprentice care worker and progress to Springfield’s fully funded Nursing Associate Programme, eventually leading to a nursing degree.
• Alternatively, a business and administration apprenticeship could open doors to the Junior Management Programme and leadership roles in the sector.

Gracie’s journey shows how quickly enthusiasm and aptitude can set a young person on a confident and rewarding career path in healthcare.
