This Mother’s Day, we are shining a spotlight on a special duo within the Springfield Healthcare team, Jan and her daughter Carly. While many families spend Mother’s Day visiting one another, Jan and Carly often spend theirs alongside each other, committed to the residents they care for at Campbell Court.
We recently spoke with Jan and Carly to learn more about their journey in care.
What inspired you to work in care?
Jan: I used to visit an elderly relative in a care home and automatically helped residents with drinks, assisted feeding and activities. I really enjoyed helping those who needed it most, so I applied for a job in a care home.
Carly: My mum would always tell me how rewarding working in care was so I thought I would give it a go. I am a very caring person and like to help others, so I thought working in care would provide me with an opportunity to do something I enjoy.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Campbell Court?
Jan: The job is varied where no two days are the same, which is brilliant. From being hands-on delivering care, to working in the office completing care plans, I can get a full picture of all aspects of care.
Carly: I love supporting and assisting my clients and I always find it very rewarding when I have finished a call knowing I have helped someone go about their daily living. I also love chatting and listening to the residents and learning more about their life history.
When did you join the team at Campbell Court?
Jan: I joined the team in 2005.
Carly: I joined in 2021.
What does it mean to work with your mother/daughter?
Jan: It’s really nice and I find it funny when she has to call me Janet and not ‘Mam’! It is also good to be in a position where I can pass down advice to Carly from what I have learned during my years as a carer.
Carly: I did find it strange at first but now I look at it that she is a work colleague at work and a ‘Mam’ at home. She also treats me like a member of the team, the same as the other carers. It’s also nice to have someone to walk to work with and go back home with once work has finished for the day.
How long have you worked together?
5 years.
How long have you worked in care?
Jan: I have worked in care for 32 years.
Carly: I have worked in care for 6 years, first beginning in community care.
How do you usually celebrate Mother’s Day?
Jan: I have always worked on Mother’s Day and Carly works every Sunday, so me, Carly and the family will usually celebrate on the Saturday.
How did you celebrate Mother’s Day this year?
Carly: Due to both of us working on the Sunday, all the family celebrated on the Saturday at Mum’s house.
