Springfield Healthcare’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant was on full display on Thursday 7th August as Wayne Thackray, a trainer from our Sheffield branch, attended a special Cadet Force day in Driffield.
As a Bronze member of the Covenant, Springfield Healthcare is a strong supporter of the skills and values instilled by the cadet program, which we believe have a direct link to the qualities we seek in our future healthcare professionals.

Wayne, who has a long history with the cadets himself as a former cadet, reservist and instructor, stepped in to represent Springfield Healthcare. The dedicated group of Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers ,whose efforts uphold the motto of ‘Inspire to achieve,’ were instrumental in making the day a success. Wayne was particularly impressed by the hands on activities, which included laser rifle shooting, operating a cannon and teamwork exercises like crossing a simulated river with equipment.

“It was a fantastic day,” Wayne said. “You could see the cadets developing leadership, teamwork and analytical skills in a really positive environment.”
“It’s a healthy, structured environment that’s all about building confidence and a sense of purpose. These are the same core values we want to foster in our Youth Academy, our healthcare workers of the future.”
The Cadet Force program, much like Springfield’s Youth Academy, provides a pathway for young people to gain crucial skills and experience. Wayne’s own career is a testament to this, as his time as a cadet instructor directly led him to his role as a trainer at Springfield Healthcare. His later experience as a volunteer with the EMT and in Mountain Rescue also gave him a profound understanding of dealing with sensitive and difficult circumstances—an invaluable skill within the care sector.
Springfield Healthcare is honoured to support the Armed Forces Covenant and looks forward to continuing our partnership with organisations that provide such valuable opportunities for young people.
