Springfield Healthcare Welcomes New Mental Health First Aiders

We are pleased to announce that Springfield recently hosted several Mental Health First Aid training courses across Yorkshire and the North-East. These session were an overwhelming success, with 16 team members from across all branches coming together to officially qualify as Mental Health First Aiders.

By undertaking this training, it means that these individuals can support their colleagues who may be struggling with their mental wellbeing. In more detail, our Mental Health First Aiders will be able to:

  • Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention.

  • Encourage a colleague to identify and access sources of professional help and other support.

  • Practice active listening and empathy.

  • Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma.

  • Discuss the Mental Health First Aider role in depth, including boundaries and confidentiality.

  • Practice self-care.

  • Know how to use the MHFAider Support App.

  • Understand how to access a dedicated text service provided by Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England.

Madeline Pratt, Care Co-Ordinator Springfield Healthcare in Hull, said: “I really enjoyed the Mental Health First Aider because it was welcoming, engaging and provided me with information to better support others. I learned how important it is to listen without judgement, recognise when someone may be struggling, and help guide them to the right support.”

“I feel more aware, understanding and approachable, and I hope to use what I have learned to help create a supportive environment where people feel comfortable talking about their mental health.”

Terry Perkins, Branch Trainer at Hull, added: “As a trainer, it was incredibly rewarding to see staff coming together with such enthusiasm for the course. This training was about equipping our teams with the knowledge to identify when a colleague is struggling and offer real, non-judgemental support.”

“Our staff are our greatest asset, and the more people we have trained as Mental Health First Aiders, the stronger and safer our workplace community becomes. I’d highly encourage anyone to complete this training; you could be the support that a colleague needs.”

At Springfield Healthcare, we are proud to promote a work environment where the mental wellbeing of our staff is at the forefront of what we do. By having designated Mental Health First Aiders at Springfield, our staff should feel comforted that they will have someone to talk to when life gets a little challenging.
