International Women’s Day: The Vital Role of Women Carers

This International Women’s Day, Springfield Healthcare is proud to stand alongside our communities to celebrate the incredible women who keep our society moving; for those who provide care in the community and those who provide care behind closed doors.

The theme for this years International Women’s Day is “Give to Gain” recognising women and unpaid care.

The “Give to Gain” philosophy emphasises that when we increase opportunities and support for women, the benefits ripple outward. A supported woman is an empowered leader, a resilient carer and a vital part of the community.

WOMEN IN CARE

According to recent data from Carers UK, women continue to shoulder the majority of caring responsibilities. In England and Wales, 59% of unpaid carers are female, and approximately 10% of all women and girls provide unpaid care to a family member, partner or friend.

The impact is often most significant for women in their late 50s:

  • One in five women aged 55–59 are currently providing care.

  • Older women are the most likely to provide “high-intensity” care, often clocking 50 hours or more every single week.

While the dedication of these women is inspiring, it often comes at a cost. The 2025 Carers Leeds survey highlighted the real-world pressures women face, with many reporting:

  • Persistent stress and burnout.

  • Disrupted sleep and physical health struggles.

  • Feelings of loneliness or isolation.

At Springfield Healthcare, we see this reality every day. Many of the families we support come to us when a primary carer is reaching a breaking point, trying to balance a career, their own family and the complex needs of a loved one.

How We Can Help Women Thrive

Gender equality isn’t just a goal; it’s something we forge together through daily actions. There are countless ways to contribute to the advancement of women, especially those navigating the challenges of the healthcare sector and unpaid care:

  • Sharing Knowledge & Mentorship: Passing on skills and experience to the next generation of healthcare professionals.

  • Providing Infrastructure & Resources: Ensuring women have the physical and emotional tools they need to lead and care effectively.

  • Advocacy & Visibility: Speaking up for the rights of carers and celebrating the often-unseen work women do every day.

  • Investing Time: Offering a listening ear or a helping hand to a colleague or a neighbour who is balancing multiple roles.

By giving generously, whether through education, training or simple human connection, we create a more interconnected and supportive world where everyone has the chance to flourish.

How can Springfield help?

If you are a woman providing unpaid care, remember that asking for help is an act of strength, not a sign of failure. We offer a range of services designed to give you back the time and mental space you deserve:

  • Respite Care: Short-term support to give you a well-earned break.

  • Personal & Domestic Support: Helping with the daily “to-do” list so you can focus on being a daughter, wife or friend.

  • Dementia & Complex Care: Expert professional assistance for peace of mind.

This March 8th, let’s celebrate the resilience of women carers. By giving them the recognition and support they need, we all gain a more compassionate world.
