Paul Samuels, a customer of Pathways to Independence, has experienced a profound transformation in his life, thanks to the dedicated and compassionate support he receives, particularly from his support worker, Ayesha. The personalised approach from Pathways to Independence has enabled Paul to achieve lifelong dreams, navigate health challenges with confidence and find joy in everyday life.

Before receiving support from Pathways to Independence, Paul Samuels’ life was significantly limited by his health conditions and a lack of opportunities. As a person with a learning disability and diabetes, his ability to manage his own medication was a significant barrier to independence, particularly for something as routine as travel.
He had never left the United Kingdom, and his lifelong dream of visiting Disneyland felt impossible to achieve. While he enjoyed his passion for football, his life lacked the excitement of new experiences and the confidence to step outside of his comfort zone. Hospital appointments were daunting, and he lacked a dedicated support system to make these challenging situations less frightening.
For years, Paul had an unfulfilled dream of visiting Disneyland and meeting his favourite characters. As his health began to deteriorate, his support worker, Ayesha, recognized the urgency of making this dream a reality. In a testament to the proactive care provided by Pathways to Independence, she and Paul’s social worker worked together to orchestrate a surprise trip. They secretly obtained a passport for Paul and booked the entire holiday, revealing the plan to him and his best friend on his birthday, just three weeks before they were due to depart.

The holiday was a monumental success. Paul’s first ever trip abroad was filled with magical moments. He met every Disney character, flirted with the princesses and braved the rides. A particularly memorable moment occurred when a mini rollercoaster broke down, requiring Paul to walk down a ladder with the help of an attendant. He found the situation hilarious and recounts the story often, saying he would go back for a whole month if he ever won the lottery. The trip also presented an opportunity for Paul to try something new, swimming. With Ayesha’s support, he overcame his fears and learned to kick his legs in the pool, an achievement he was incredibly proud to share with his friends and social worker.
Paul’s trust in Ayesha also helps him face more serious challenges. When he had a hospital procedure, he specifically requested Ayesha to be with him in the operating room. Without hesitation, she donned scrubs, held his hand throughout the procedure and made him laugh about her ill fitting uniform. That same night, as he couldn’t be left alone, Ayesha stayed with him for a “pajama party,” watching his favourite show, Mrs. Brown’s Boys, to turn a potentially scary hospital stay into a comforting and positive experience.
Paul’s story demonstrates the life-changing impact of a deep and trusting relationship with support workers can have. Through the unwavering dedication of his support team, Paul has not only seen his dreams come true but has also gained the confidence and support needed to face life’s challenges with courage and a smile.
