The Heart of Homecare: Investing in Our People

By kelly smith – regional support manager (yorkshire)

As Operations Support Manger at Springfield Healthcare, my focus is, and always will be, on high quality care. I see firsthand the profound impact our work has on the lives of our customers. For many, staying at home isn’t just a preference—it’s a lifeline. It’s about maintaining a sense of self and dignity in a familiar environment. However, this is only possible when the care we provide is not only consistent but truly exceptional.

The reality is that our sector faces significant challenges. There’s a common misconception that home care is a simple, low-skill job. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Our caregivers are professionals who perform a range of complex tasks, from managing medications to providing emotional support. They are the backbone of our service, yet they are often under-compensated and overworked. This high-pressure environment leads to burnout and a constant churn of staff, which ultimately harms the quality of care. A new face every week means a lack of rapport, trust, and continuity for the person receiving care.

At Springfield, we are actively working to change this narrative. We believe that investing in our team is the best way to invest in our clients. This means providing fair wages, robust training, and a supportive work environment that values our caregivers as the skilled professionals they are. We’re also committed to creating person-centered care plans that allow our staff enough time to do their job properly—to not just rush through a list of tasks, but to build meaningful connections.

The future of home care depends on our collective ability to recognize and respect the vital role these professionals play. By elevating their status and ensuring they have the resources they need, we can create a sustainable system that delivers the high-quality, compassionate care every individual deserves.
