For the latest instalment of our Meet the Team series, we are stepping into the world of Live-in Care with Becky Fielder, our Business Development Lead for our Live-in Care services. In our conversation, Becky shone a light on why she is so passionate about live-in care and what a typical day looks like when you’re dedicated to finding the perfect care match for families across Yorkshire and the North of England.
What first attracted you to begin a career in care?
I first started working in care when I experienced caring for somebody I knew. I took to it instantly and wanted to be able to help more people. I considered a career in Nursing but soon fell in love in my role of a Care Assistant. I have been able to get to know so many interesting people and I have enjoyed making a difference to people’s everyday lives.
Describe how your career has progressed in the sector to get you where you are today?
I have spent most of my career in care as a Care Coordinator which was a challenging role that kept me on my toes. As much as I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the role, my favourite part was always the growth of the business and being able to help more people. Therefore, it was a natural progression to my current role as my primary focus is growing the Live-in Care service and I enjoy being able to teach people about the service and how wonderful it can be.
Describe your day-to-day and wide duties of your job role?
Every day is different in my current role. I spend a lot of my time in the community at various charity and networking events, spreading the word on Live-in Care. I assess potential new customers and support with the management of the Live-In care team. I am also lucky enough to be able to explore new areas of opportunity of Springfield, which is something I love about my role.
At Springfield, we strive to be able to support people through their full care journey, and we are always looking for ways we can continue to support people and adapt with their needs.
What is the most rewarding part of your role at Springfield?
The most rewarding part of my role is being able to support people to stay at home. Live-in Care is an alternative to residential care and studies show that people, especially those who are living with Dementia, excel and thrive in their own environments and it’s amazing to see. I am proud that all the Live-in team share this value and are always looking for ways for their clients to remain at home safely and happily.
How has the landscape of care changed since you first started your career?
We use a lot more technology in comparison to when I first began my career in care. Also, there are more opportunities for progression with Nurse delegated tasks and schemes such as the Nursing Associate programmes. The ‘home first’ model has improved too; it’s the heart of what we do, and it’s amazing to and hear it more from the professionals we work with.
What advice would you give someone who may be interested in pursuing a similar role within the care sector?
I would encourage anybody to work in health and social care sector; it is rewarding and meaningful work. My biggest piece of advice to anyone starting out as a carer would be to do it proudly. This industry can be undervalued and should be celebrated.
What are you most excited about regarding the future of Springfield Healthcare?
I am most excited about the development of the clinical services we provide under our TDDI registration. I am proud to be a small part of it and I’m looking forward to seeing our team learn new skills and be able to offer more support to the people who need it the most.
When you aren’t at work, how do you like to spend your time?
I spend a lot of my spare time in the kitchen, cooking, baking and trying new recipes. I’m trying lots of Chinese recipes at the moment! I also have two dogs who I enjoy walking too.
What unique skills and experiences do you bring to the Springfield team?
I think I bring empathy and lived experience which serves me well in my current role. I have previously supported my Mum following a brain injury, and my Dad who is living with Dementia. I do feel that these experiences have given me some understanding of some of the challenges faced by some of our customers and their families. I also bring a little humour to my work.
